Programs Offered

The Mildred Hunter Community Center (MHCC) is home to a wide array of programs, including the following:

  • The Marching Pride Drill Team
  • The RC Car Club
  • Several teen mentoring groups
  • VLPRA's adult basketball and youth football programs

About our Facility

The MHCC has a gym with a full-size basketball court and pull out bleachers for open recreation and perfect for hosting games and tournaments. There’s also a full size kitchen, breakout rooms, a kid’s playroom, and a brand new exercise room with plenty of cardio equipment and weights. Step outside to find our pristine outdoor pool with new patio furniture. The pool is situated right next to Harrington Park and provides a fantastic area to play in the sweltering South Georgia summers.

Current Programs Offered at the VLPRA Mildred Hunter Community Center

Marching Pride Drill Team

This is a free mentoring program for young men in the City of Valdosta and Lowndes County that helps young men building self-esteem, discipline and motivation. Program meets on Wednesday afternoons from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. For more information on dates, contact Andre Newson at 259-5437.

Youth Remote Control Car Club

This is a free mentoring program for young men that builds character and self-esteem and welcomes all youth to learn about remote control car racing. Program meets on Wednesday afternoons from 4 to 5:30 p.m. For more information on registration and dates, contact Andre Newson at 259-5437.

Young Ladies Circles with Ambition

This program provides guidance and mentors for young ladies. The young ladies will participate in group sessions that will include guest speakers, educational workshops, courtesy and productive lifestyles. Program meets once a month on Saturday from 11 a.m.-Noon. For more information, contact Michael Foster at 259-5407.

Intervention Guidance Mentoring Program

This is a mentoring program for youth and teenagers ages 11-18 to help in dealing with life, goals, conflict, and character to become model citizens. Program meets once a month on Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon. For more information, contact Andre Newson at 259-5437.

Adult Boot Camp Exercise Class

Come join our VLPRA Family Fitness Center at the Mildred Hunter Community Center and take advantage of our Adult Boot Camp Exercise Class. The program is for the whole family which is taught on Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30 to 6:15. For more information, contact Andre Newson at 259-5437.

Senior Bingo and Health Education

BINGO! Enjoy fun, competitive games of bingo, meet new friends, and learn critical information about your health. Guest speakers will talk about issues you care about, all while you play for prizes. It's free and no registration is required. This is open to all seniors and is held each Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the MHCC.

Checkers and Chess Club

Join us every Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to sharpen your chess and checkers skills. Boards and game pieces are provided. It's free to play and no registration is required. It is open to all adults.

Dancing Dolls Contemporary and Hip Hop Dance Classes

This is an 8-week dance class for young girls. The program meets on Mondays when in session. Space is limited to 10 dancers per class. It is $80 for all eight weeks or $10 per week. 7 to 9 year olds dance on Mondays from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. 10 to 12 year olds dance on Mondays from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. The session will end with a recital.
