Flyer for Christmas Card Cruise with instructions on how to enter

Welcome to VLPRA’s first-ever community wide “Christmas Card Cruise.” We are partnering with Lowndes County, Valdosta and Hahira to take our Freedom Park Cruise county-wide!!!

This is an outdoor exhibit comprised of larger-than-life holiday “cards” created by local businesses, non-profits, families, individuals, etc. Create your own card and display it in front of your home or business from the first week of December to the first week of January. VLPRA will compile a list of cards and create a map so people can drive around and view cards all over the city and county!

  • The VLPRA Christmas Card Cruise is open to all businesses and residents of Lowndes County.

Process and Fee

  • Simply sign up here for free.  There are no fees to register your card.
  • YOU are responsible for creating your own card, decorating your own card.  You understand by signing up that VLPRA takes no responsibility for your card, purchasing decisions, contents, set up, decoration, or take down.
  • We will stop accepting registrations on December 1st to create a map for residents to view cards.  Miss the deadline?  That's okay!  Make a card anyway!  It just won't be on this year's map.

Important info:

  • Participants must provide their own card and decorating materials as well as a way to light the card at night.
  • Designs must be holiday themed and suitable for public viewing by all ages to be listed on the community map. Anything not holiday related will not be included on the community map.

Purchase list.  This is a suggested list:

  • Two 4x8 foot sheets of ½ inch plywood; cut them yourself or have the hardware store cut them to 4x6 sheets. You will then use the 4x6 sheets to make the card.
  • Two packs of 2.5 inch hinges (comes with screws) to hinge the card together.
  • At least one gallon of Killz exterior primer and roller/pan.
  • One 2x4x8 piece of treated lumber cut into four 2-foot pieces.  This is for the feet to keep it stable. You will use a skill saw set at two inches to create the feet.
  • Paints and paint brushes for art.
  • Polyurethane finishing spray to protect the piece after you have painted it
  • Two solar lights (one for each panel of the card).
  • We suggest using cardboard or some other material to place between the card panels when you take the card down and fold it to store.

Tools Needed:

  • Drill with Philips head bit to attach hinges

  • Skill saw to notch the feet (saw should be set at 2-inch depth).  You may not need this if the hardware store will cut it.

  • Measuring tape

  • A trusty pencil to mark your place before any cuts!

VLPRA reserves the right to refuse cards for the map at in its sole discretion.

Types of Events

Movies in the park

VLPRA offers free movies in our parks and public places in Valdosta & Lowndes County throughout the year. Movies are usually family friendly features with G and PG ratings and we often show big name blockbusters from Disney and Pixar.  We sometimes offer a PG-13 film for an older audience.  We show the movies on our massive inflatable 20-foot screen starting at dusk.  Please check above for individual dates.

VLPRA is proud to offer the largest public fireworks display in South Georgia.  Our fireworks are always on July 4th and start between 9:15 PM - 9:30 PM.  The location is TBD.

Stocked Cart Race

Runners, start your engines for the wackiest, most fun event of the year!  Our annual Stocked Cart Race is basically a 50-yard dash where runners push decorated shopping carts.  Businesses, schools, churches, families, and groups of friends enter as teams.  Teams are given one shopping cart each to decorate and race. We have a double elimination bracket and race head to head until we have a fastest cart.

The most important part of the event: the entry fee is food for Hungry at Home.  Each team must bring at least $25 of food (no money, please).  The more food, the better as we hand out awards for most food raised, best decorated cart, and fastest cart. Hungry at Home is a local non-profit that sends food home on Fridays with kids who don't have enough to eat on the weekends.  All donated food must be kid-friendly and not require a can opener or stove.  Think: pop top Chef Boyardee meals, granola bars, oatmeal packets, pop top tuna kits, vienna sausages, raisins, etc.  Find out more about Hungry at Home at their website: www.hungryathome.org.

Father/Son Campout

Go camping in the outfield!  Boys ages four and up can spend the night on the South Lowndes Ball Field with their father or adult male family member at this overnight event.  Activities include a cookout, games, s'mores, night baseball, and a movie on the backstop.  Dinner is provided Friday night and breakfast is provided Saturday morning.  Bring your own tent and bag chairs; tent set up begins at 6:00 PM Friday.  Space is limited.  Event typically happens in the fall.  Fees are TBD.
